Insurance Objection Handling: Scripts That Convert
Every insurance agent faces objections. The difference between a good agent and a great one is how they handle them. Here are proven scripts for the five most common objections you will encounter.
Objection 1: "I need to think about it." This is the most common stall tactic. Respond with: "I completely understand. Most of my clients feel the same way initially. Can I ask what specifically you would like to think about? Is it the coverage, the price, or something else?" This re-engages the conversation and surfaces the real objection.
Objection 2: "Your price is too high." Never lead with price justification. Instead: "I hear you, and I want to make sure we find the right fit for your budget. Can you share what you were hoping to spend? Sometimes we can adjust the coverage to find a better price point while still protecting what matters most."
Objection 3: "I already have coverage." Respond with: "That is great that you are already protected. Many of my clients come to me with existing coverage. What typically happens is we find gaps they were not aware of, or we find the same coverage at a better rate. Would it be worth 5 minutes to compare?"
Objection 4: "I want to shop around first." This is actually a buying signal. They are actively looking. Say: "Absolutely, you should compare your options. That is smart. What I can do is give you a benchmark quote right now so you have something to compare against. That way you will know a good deal when you see one."
Objection 5: "I need to talk to my spouse." Respect this while keeping momentum: "Of course, this is a family decision. Would it help if I prepared a summary of what we discussed that you can share with them? And I am happy to set up a time when we can all three jump on a quick call."
The common thread in all these scripts is acknowledging the objection, asking a follow-up question, and redirecting toward a next step. Practice these responses until they feel natural, and you will see your close rate improve significantly.
